Bridgend 2nds, ably coached by Pencoed Travel, played against an experienced Cardiff & Met team at the National Hockey Centre in the Welsh 2nd XI Cup Final at Sophia Gardens, the Club’s second home.
Starting like a migrating salmon with runs from Kris Williams and Mike Hodges, Bridgend’s game flowed in one direction (although Harry couldn’t be seen). Immediate pressure led to the first short corner. Bridgend baited the Cardiff defence who were left flailing like a fish out of water, as Jon ‘the Hammerhead Shark’ Rubery struck the ball into the net. 1-0 to Bridgend.
Excellent schooling in defence by Woody, Wooster (or was that Phil) and Coelacanth like Steve Murphy repelled the Cardiff attacks like sticklebacks protecting their young. Bridgend kept their patience, with Matt Hibbert and shoal mate Mike Hodges, slipping like eels through the oppositions midfield. Constant pressure paid off with the ball just in the right plaice for Andy ‘the smolt ‘ Schofield smashing the ball to the far post for Tim Hodges to deflect home from 2″.
The tidal power of Bridgend was now awesome sweeping in waves past the spinning Cardiff defence and flowing moves saw Andy Jones and Andy Jones share passes before feeding young Hodges who reversed the ball in for his second and Bridgend’s third. Cardiff fought back bravely, like a deer in the piranha infested Amazon, with star ex-Bridgend (he was sacked) veteran Mal ‘the trout’ Thomas coming on as sub and assisting in a deflected consolation goal for the capital’s representatives.
The third quarter team talk by Jon ‘shiney herring’ Murphy and Rhys the fishyio, drew Bridgend together and Hibbo in goal and Andy Jones(snr) made some outstanding goal line clearances. The final result of 3-1 to Bridgend scaled new heights, and the trophy was presented to skipper Rhod Owen.
